Francis Misstates More Church Doctrine

Pope Francis: war is “the suicide of humanity”

“Today we have come to pray for our dead, for our wounded, for the victims of the madness that is war! It is the suicide of humanity, because it kills the heart, it kills precisely that which is the message of the Lord: it kills love! Because war comes from hatred, from envy, from desire for power, and – we’ve seen it many times – it comes from that hunger for more power.”

Judge Bartley:

Two points:

First war is not suicide. Fr. Harden defines suicide as “The direct killing of oneself on one’s own authority. It is a grave sin against the natural and revealed law.”

Only individuals can commit suicide.

Second, war can be murder if it is not a just war in collective self-defense. Thus in the Nazi and other totalitarian wars, the persons who initiated the wars are guilty of murder; and those killing or cooperating in the wars for those regimes are also guilty of murder.

Once again, Francis has misstated Church principle.
