Was Walter Jones prescient in Insisting Speaker Candidates be Vetted?

“Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-NC) 54%, a liberal Republican congresswoman from North Carolina, censored the press in her district on Tuesday—refusing to allow credentialed members of the media to ask legitimate questions of the congresswoman about her alleged affair with House Majority Leader
Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) 45% or about the House Speakership race.”
Last week, McCarthy dropped his candidacy for Speaker within hours after Congressman Walter Jones warned the Speaker Candidate be vetted. See Congressman Walter Jones Says All Speaker Candidates Ought be Vetted for Moral Turpitude :

“Republican North Carolina Rep. Walter Jones (R-NC) 72% is urging all candidates for Speaker of the House to drop out of the race if skeletons in their closet might embarrass the Republican Party. Jones sent a letter Wednesday to Republican Conference chairman Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) 48% issuing a challenge to House Speaker candidates Reps. Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) 45%, Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) 82%, and Rep. Daniel Webster (R-FL) 64%.”

“Some of the most difficult times have been when our Republican leaders or potential Republican leaders must step down because of skeletons in their closets,” Jones wrote. “We’ve seen it with former Speaker Newt Gingrich and Rep. Bob Livingston, who ran for Speaker in 1998.”
